What is aniline leather?

Aniline leathers are leather dyed with aniline dyes in the bathroom. It is open-pored smooth leather without a pigment layer (color layer) on the top, which still reveal the natural texture of the skin material and are generally considered to be very expensive and valuable leather. For aniline leather only absolutely flawless skins come into question, since the surface structure of the leather remains completely visible. Leather with forked bites, tick bites, thorn cracks or horn bumps, which stand out in the main surfaces of the dermis, are out of the question. Kangaroo leathers are considered very tear-resistant and can be processed thinner and lighter than cowhide with the same stability. Their average thickness is 1 millimeter; However, compared to cowhide with a thickness of 1.2 mm to 1.4 mm, they are almost twice as resistant to tension, take up only half as much water and are 50% more tear-resistant. These properties are due to a very strong skin fiber network. At 20% of its original thickness, cowhide is said to have just 1% to 4% of its original tensile strength, while kangaroo leather is still 30% to 60%. The kangaroo leather has a more comfortable fit compared to conventional cowhide. The leather is very expensive to purchase and is therefore used only for high quality products, where the stability, tensile strength and water absorption plays a major role.
