Alpha Industries began manufacturing military apparel in 1959 in a rented factory in Knoxville, Tennessee. Alpha's superior quality quickly gained a good standing with the US Department of Defense. The company's reputation also spread to the civilian population, driven by subcultures of youth. Alpha's fame was built on the basis of some important designs, such as the MA-1 bomber jacket - the classic US Air Force flight jacket for over 50 years. It was developed for use in cold weather, and in Indian orange with high visibility for use in emergencies.
The MA-1 jacket has been adapted by the designers again and again since the 80s. Another popular icon is the jacket M-65, which became a basic American field jacket in 1965. It became famous during the Vietnam War. Not only because it was worn by soldiers - also peace demonstrators enjoyed the jacket. It was shown in countless films and worn by Robert De Niro in "Taxi Driver", for example.
